As part of the Transportation Security Administration, a transportation security officer (TSO) is responsible for preserving the safety of citizens across the nation. Under this position they must protect aircraft, crew, and passengers from terrorist attacks and other potential threats. TSA employment requires that Transportation Security Officers screen travelers and make judgment calls based on what they perceive as a security risk. They perform physical scans of bodies and vehicles, verify I.D. cards, and direct the traffic of the thousands who will enter and leave the airport facility.
A high school diploma or equivalent is all that is needed to begin training for transportation security officer jobs. Those who wish to advance in the field are often required to have additional training and certification in law enforcement or security guard work.
